A Mothers Story

A Memorial and/or Sympathy Gift for a mother.  I recognized the importance of the soil from where one comes, when I read the story about a family that when they left their son after the departure ceremony for Irag, the mother carried away a baggie of sand from where they last stood and embraced in a bear hug of love, as it turned out, for the last time.

This made me start thinking about soil. Gold and Diamonds are just a few of the precious rocks man seeks, even to this day, however, let us not forget that the difference between a well fed nation and one that starves is fertile soil. (Dirt)

When they buried their son they placed a rose with a note telling him they loved him on his casket and kissed it one last time before they sealed his vault. As they walked away, the mother carefully knelt, scooped up some dirt from his grave and placed it the tissue that held her tears.

The mother put the dirt in a drawer and she opened it every morning when she gets dressed, and she takes a moment to remember, and touch the baggies.

In the weeks and months after that, it became an urgency for the mother to have a small rock and some sand from the place where he died. This information was shared with contacts here and in Iraq . One day, a manilla envelope arrived post marked APO Baghdad. It contained a note saying "from where her son died" and two baggies, one with sand and one with a few small rocks.

The mother said that they really look at me strange when it comes to my affection for rocks and dirt. But maybe they think so because they don't see it the way she does.

The mother said that It is still a life mission that she go to that spot where her son died and kneel with respect and touch that ground where he fell. God willing, she shall, no matter how old she might be.

The grieving process is one of the most difficult and emotionally wrenching experiences that you will go through in your lifetime. Its' emotional and physical manifestations can last well after the initial shock and despair of the loss. Sometimes these feelings can last for months, sometimes years, and for some people, it never really subsides.

For many of us, the old saying 'time heals all wounds' does not seem to apply. Maybe some days are better than others, but overall it seems that no matter what we do we are still so caught up in our feelings and emotions that we can't move on.

The final stage is acceptance, as we believe that our loved one has died. Some may confuse it with being alright, but this is not the case. As we begin to recognize the permanency of your loss, we must redefine our lives, which will never be as they were before the loss.

You may feel guilty for living, knowing you cannot bring them back. But you can celebrate the life of your loved one even while mourning their death.

We believe a keepsake memorial should be an everlasting tribute to a loved one’s life. It should reflect something of a person’s beliefs, values and personality. And Fertile Soil from the State you Love, North Dakota is just such a monumental keepsake.

Our lives are richer for having known you But poorer for losing you.  You are the flame that will burn forever in hearts across the world.  The sunshine of so many lives.
